The Crooked Man

     "There was a crooked man ; And he walked a crooked mile 

       He found a crooked sixpence ; Upon a crooked stile  

       He bought a crooked cat ; Which caught a crooked mouse  

       And they all lived together ; In a crooked little house "

     The Crooked Man , is another pixel horror game that I am interested in. The game itself starts with a boy named David moving into a new room in apartment with the help of his two buddies, named Paul and Marion. Although the apartment room seems to be old, David is grateful for Paul to look for a room for him to live in. Things then started to become weird in David's new room, water started running by itself in the bathroom, words appearing on the bathroom mirror, finding a scrap of paper under the bed, hearing a man's crying voice at night and such. David did not give much thought to it at firs , and he went to visit his mother in the hospital, it appears that she always get confused and can't recognize her own son. Then on that night, weird things happened again. David found a paper with an address and he decided to pay the place a visit. Throughout the game,  David visited 3 places : hotel, school, and hospital. He meets one person at each places : Sissi, D and Fluffy and he saves all of them from the crooked man ( fails to do so if he chose the wrong answer --- Bad Ending ).

     The Crooked Man is the monster who keeps on trying to kill David during the game. His real name is Duke MacGahan and he is the tenant that Davis has been looking for in the whole game. He committed suicide years ago due to depression and he is the real identity of the Crooked Man. As the Crooked Man, he goes after David but if he would also tries to kill Sissi, D or Fluffy as well. It is then revealed that three of them are facets of Duke, they are the dark past of Duke. Sissi has regrets over lost love, D has regrets over failed dreams, and Fluffy's been abandoned. These are all the pasts of Duke and David too is similar to him, all these eventually led to Duke's suicide.

     As Sissi, D and Fluffy are facets of Duke, the stories of theirs during the game was actually his. When he was young, he was "abandoned" by his mother due to her death in the hospital, leaving him the depressing feeling of being abandoned. After that, he decided to become a lawyer, but he never passed the final exam no matter how hard he tried. The only thing left for him by then was his girlfriend who he loved so much, he made her gifts and took her to their "special place" in a hotel, but eventually she abandoned him too, this made him extremely depressed. He left the apartment he lived in( currently the one David is living in), went to his mother's abandoned house and committed suicide by hanging himself, which explains the crooked neck of his when he became a vengeful spirit.

     According to my research, the Crooked Man, Duke has been going after David during the whole game as he wants to help David to move on with his life and not to take Duke's path. David realizes that in the game and thanks him before leaving Duke's mother's abandoned house, where he found Duke's corpse.

     In the final scene of the game( for good ending), Duke's corpse is retrieved and put to rest in cemetery, probably by David. David visits Duke's grave, puts some Marlboro cigarettes next to the grave and he says that they would see each other again. He even has conversation with Duke's spirit before Duke passes on. His spirit is later seen after David and Shirley(David's ex) are back into their relationship, so it is implied that he will continue looking after David.

     The reason why I was attracted to this game is because that the story is very beautiful despite being a horror game. Even though David has been feeling down about his life, thinking that he is a very pathetic individual, he did not realise that he could change that by stop having the negative mindset. Not only Duke tried to help David, but even David's best friend, Paul has been worrying for him and even saved him from killing himself with a gun on the rooftop of the hospital. This story taught us to never look down on ourselves and give up on our life, because we are capable of changing our life as long as we change our mindset. Never get discouraged by the obstacles that we face throughout our life journey.
